ARC Visit

Atlantic Rim Collaboratory Visits Dunshaughlin Community College

Monday 11th September was an exciting day for all in Dunshaughlin Community College. The college were invited by the Department of Education and Science to host a group of delegates from the ARC (Atlantic Rim Collaboratory) Summit to explore and discuss a range of practical steps that will make a significant positive impact on the learning of children and young people in our education systems.

The College were honoured to have been one of four schools in the country selected by the DES to host these delegates in acknowledgment of the School’s Provision for Student Wellbeing and the impressive Whole School Evaluation Report in 2016. This WSE-MLL report recognised the unique and innovative approach in DCC to student leadership, promotion of wellbeing and School Self Evaluation, each of which played a central role in the discussions that took place on the day between staff, students and the delegates.

A group of four delegates, including the world renowned educationalist Andy Hargreaves, visited the school. Andy Hargreaves is the Thomas More Brennan Chair in the Lynch School of Education at Boston College. Andy has authored or edited over 30 books and serves as adviser in education to the Premier of Ontario, is founding editor of two scholarly journals, and is President Elect of the International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement. In January 2015, he was ranked number six scholar with most influence on US policy. Andy consults with organizations and governments all over the world and the college were honoured to welcome such a prestigious guest.

Also included in the delegation were Dewi Knight, a Specialist Advisor for Educational Reform at Llywodraeth Cymru/Welsh Government, Ken Muir, Chief Executive of the General Teaching Council for Scotland and Norman Emerson Director of Assessment National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA).

Following a tour of the school led by the Senior Prefects, three members of the staff presented on key themes; Muireann Nic an Rí spoke about the powerful journey of student leadership that has taken place in the college, Annemarie O’Brien outlined the range of supports and structures that enhance student and staff wellbeing and Roisín Ní Dhushláine detailed the Colleges unique approach to student-led School Self Evaluation. The passion and commitment of the staff was acknowledged by the students present and echoed in the feedback received from the delegates themselves.

Delegates then had an opportunity to engage with student representatives to elicit their thoughts on student wellbeing, student voice, leadership, teaching, learning and assessment.

The delegates will share their findings from DCC with the wider ARC Summit to enact real change in educational systems across the 10 countries/regions in ARC.

Staff and students in DCC were proud to have had the opportunity to showcase the commitment of the school to its students.
