10 medals for D.C.C. at Meath Athletics.

A total of 22 students competed in the first major meet of the season in a variety of disciplines at Claremount Stadium in Navan.  Amy O’Connor, who recently joined the school, was the first to put D.C.C. on the scoreboard with a super 2nd place in the long jump.  Niamh Hetherington proved she is the Queen of the Sprints with a convincing 1st place in the U19 race-this is the 6th year in a row that she has taken the title.  The boys were very successful in the initial rounds of the sprints with Luke Phelan, Eoin Harkin and Aaron O’Connor battling their way to the finals.  Eoin Harkin secured 3rd in his competition.  Jarlath Jordan was very impressive, making the transition from cross-country to track look effortless with a 1st in the 800m and a 3rd in 1500m, while Paddy Maher took the 1st in the later race.  Sarah Bateson, despite being our youngest competitor is already established as a stalwart of the school’s athletics team and she shone in her 800m race as she sailed to victory with ease! The u15 1500m race was very tight throughout and a great battle ensued on the home straight for the bronze medal with Sean O’ Connor just inching ahead of Jake Cullen.  Ciaran Quinn, a new man to the track was rewarded for all his hard work over the past few months with a well-deserved 3rd in the senior race, while Evan Maher ended the day with a solid 3rd in the shot putt.  Special mention must go to both Aaron O’Connor and Rajul Singh who showed great determination today in their respective competitions.
