Gaisce – The President’s Award is the country’s most prestigious individual award for young people aged between 15 and 25. It is a self-development programme that encourages students to find their passion, get active and make a difference in their community! This year, Dunshaughlin Community College had a fantastic 26 pupils participate in the President’s Award for their Bronze medals, under the guidance of Ms. Bergin and Ms. Curran.
Gaisce is an old Irish word which means ‘a great achievement’ and it is in the spirit of this, that the programme challenged students to take work in community involvement placements, learn new personal skills and participate in physical recreation, all throughout a period of 26 weeks! This year’s students were active in both the school and local community as part of their award, volunteering with the St. Vincent de Paul, coaching basketball and gaelic football, helping out with cycling clubs and taking statistics for the local G.A.A club.
Students also strove to challenge themselves by taking up new skills and sports. Some of these included cooking, baking, arts and crafts, crochet, learning new languages or learning to play a musical instrument, fencing, athletics, swimming, GAA and basketball.
The fourth and final section of the award involved students planning, preparing and undertaking an Adventure journey. This took place in the picturesque surroundings of Glendalough on Wednesday and Thursday last, May 25th and 26th. Students spent the night in the hostel in Glendalough and while there, prepared and cooked all the meals and took part in evening activities. Finally, over the two days the students hiked a huge 25 kilometres which was led by Transition Year student, Shane Carolan.
Overall, this event was the highlight of the whole Gaisce award, and students will look back on it with fond memories in the years to come!
